Functional mushrooms have been used for centuries, just not in our neck of the woods. The expert growers are the Chinese, where functional mushrooms are integral to diet, medicine and culture. The frontiers of mushroom research are also in China and Taiwan. It makes sense given their head start with mushrooms.

+ What are the active ingredients?

Mushrooms produce a number of beneficial compounds. Chief among them are polysaccharides (‘many sugars’) which have benefits for the immune system which is critical for human health. They are also known for anti-tumour effects. Other research shows polysaccharides have prebiotic effects on the gut microbiome.

Mushrooms also have Triterpenes, Phenols, Sterols, Statins, Indole compounds, Chitin and an array of enzymes.

Different mushrooms have different benefits. For example, Lion’s Mane (Hericium Erinaceus) has hericenones and erinacines which support brain functioning. You can learn here

+ How much can I take?

Most often you’ll read about a recommended dosage of 1g per day (0.035 oz) as a minimum. A qualified practitioner will be able to advise on dosage for your circumstances.

Everyday use is suggested as benefits are shown to correlate with regular consumption.

Functional mushrooms are edible mushrooms. As a natural food they are considered very safe, so you can consume more than 1 gram a day. As a reference point, participants in research studies often consume upwards of 3g per day (0.1 oz).

Note: it will take at least a few days to notice a difference. If you’re unsure whether you feel better, stop for a few days and then recommence consumption. Remember that functional mushrooms adapt to what your body needs, by up- or down-regulating your immune system.
